Backpack Safety

Many adults don’t associate back pain with common childhood ailments, but with 60% of students complaining of back aches throughout the school year, it is a trend worth recognizing. Studies have shown that children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and many believe that overweight back packs are the main culprit.
The longer a child carries an overweight back pack, the more difficult it will be to correct any issues with the spine. Children who carry their backpacks over just one shoulder may also experience neck pain and shoulder strain as a result. Overweight back packs can also cause poor posture, and narrow straps can dig into the shoulders, causing nerve and circulatory issues.

Our Back Pack Safety Tips:
  • Limit the weight of the back pack from anywhere between 5-15% of the child’s bodyweight.
  • Use a back pack with multiple compartments. This will allow for a better distribution of the weight, helping avoid unwanted strain.
  • Use a bag with wide, padded shoulder straps. Encourage your child to wear both straps when carrying the bag.
  • If possible, find a bag with a padded back for increased comfort.
  • Make sure the bag is fitted properly on your child. It should fitted close to the body and rest evenly in the middle of the back. It should not go more than four inches below the waistline.
  • Avoid carrying unnecessary items in the back pack.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding back pack safety for your child, give our office a call! We would happy to help ensure that your child’s bag fits properly and go over all the safety tips that can help prevent back pain and issues down the road. We will also provide a FREE scoliosis screening for your child before they head back to school!

Chiropractic & Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Did you know that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects 4-10 million Americans and is considered the most common nerve disorder experienced today? This is why we have made it our condition of the month for June.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that causes pain, tingling, numbness, and other symptoms in the arm and hand. It is occurs when the median nerve - one of the major nerves in the hand - becomes compressed in the carpal tunnel (a narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist.)

There are a number of factors that may play a role in the development of CTS. The anatomy of the individual's wrist, sex (CTS is more common in women), obesity, other nerve or inflammatory conditions, injuries, and, of course, workplace factors.

If you or someone you know suffers from CTS, give us a call to schedule an appointment today!

April: National Stress Awareness Month

Fast Facts about Stress

Stress on our bodies can be categorized into three main areas: physical, chemical, and emotional stress.

  • Physical stress comes from the postures and positions you maintain throughout the day; it results from your actions and activity, or lack thereof. Physical stress is relatively easy to detect and can be corrected with adequate rest, exercise, massage therapy and chiropractic care.

  • Chemicals, both man-made and natural can be a stress on your body. It occurs if you have poor nutrition or if you smoke, use alcohol or drugs. Toxic chemicals in our food, water, air, personal care and cleaning products accumulate in our bodies and add more stress. Avoiding bad habits, maintaining a healthy diet, and having a cleaner lifestyle will help reduce the chemical stress on your body.

  • Emotional stress is a little more self-explanatory and unfortunately considered by many as a normal state of being. Work, family, relationships and city life can all be significant sources of stress which in turn can have an enormous effect on our body’s ability to function well. The hormone cortisol, known as “the stress hormone” is circulated throughout the body with wide ranging effects including poor sleep, weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and general anxiety.

Chiropractic care helps manage stress by bringing balance back to the body. Treatments help by improving the nervous system, relaxing tense muscles, and lowering blood pressure.

Proper spinal alignment is the first step for reducing stress. When the spine is misaligned, the nervous system is unable to properly send messages through the body. Better spinal alignment means better communication and increased system efficiency.

Make chiropractic care a part of your health plan! Give us a call; we will put together specific treatment plans to correct your underlying spinal conditions, allowing you to express life and health to the max.

Whiplash Fast Facts

Whiplash Fast Facts

Did you know…

  • There are many ways, besides car accidents to get whiplash? Car accidents are the most common cause of whiplash, but they can also occur due to a slip and fall or playing a high impact sport like football.
  • It doesn’t take much force for whiplash to occur? Whiplash injuries can occur at speeds as low as 5-10 mph. While cars may be built to sustain the force of another vehicle, our bodies are not. The severity of the injury depends on if you were properly restrained, so be sure to always wear your seatbelt!
  • Symptoms are not always immediate & go beyond just neck pain? Although you may feel fine after an accident, it may actually take hours, days, or even weeks for symptoms to develop. Neck and shoulder pain are the most common symptoms related to whiplash injuries, however, other symptoms may include:
        • Headache
        • Dizziness
        • Fatigue
        • Difficulty swallowing, concentrating, or sleeping
        • Blurred vision
        • Nausea
  • The risk of whiplash injuries increases with age? As we get older, our movement becomes more limited, our muscles lose flexibility and strength, and our ligaments aren’t as stretchy. So when our neck whips back and forth during an accident, there’s more potential for damage. Additionally, the elderly and people who already have neck problems (such as arthritis) may experience more serious whiplash injuries.
  • Chiropractic care can help? We manage whiplash injuries with careful and precise neck adjustments. Sometimes, ice and rehabilitative exercises are used to address the injured neck, shoulder muscles, and joints. The goal of chiropractic care is to restore spinal movement; improving function while decreasing pain and inflammation.

We always recommend that you come into the office immediately for an examination if you have been involved in an accident. Even a minor fender bender can produce injuries. The earlier you are treated, the better your chances for a fully recovery!

If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, give us a call and get on our schedule!
