Backpack Safety

Many adults don’t associate back pain with common childhood ailments, but with 60% of students complaining of back aches throughout the school year, it is a trend worth recognizing. Studies have shown that children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and many believe that overweight back packs are the main culprit.
The longer a child carries an overweight back pack, the more difficult it will be to correct any issues with the spine. Children who carry their backpacks over just one shoulder may also experience neck pain and shoulder strain as a result. Overweight back packs can also cause poor posture, and narrow straps can dig into the shoulders, causing nerve and circulatory issues.

Our Back Pack Safety Tips:
  • Limit the weight of the back pack from anywhere between 5-15% of the child’s bodyweight.
  • Use a back pack with multiple compartments. This will allow for a better distribution of the weight, helping avoid unwanted strain.
  • Use a bag with wide, padded shoulder straps. Encourage your child to wear both straps when carrying the bag.
  • If possible, find a bag with a padded back for increased comfort.
  • Make sure the bag is fitted properly on your child. It should fitted close to the body and rest evenly in the middle of the back. It should not go more than four inches below the waistline.
  • Avoid carrying unnecessary items in the back pack.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding back pack safety for your child, give our office a call! We would happy to help ensure that your child’s bag fits properly and go over all the safety tips that can help prevent back pain and issues down the road. We will also provide a FREE scoliosis screening for your child before they head back to school!

Chiropractic & Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Did you know that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects 4-10 million Americans and is considered the most common nerve disorder experienced today? This is why we have made it our condition of the month for June.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that causes pain, tingling, numbness, and other symptoms in the arm and hand. It is occurs when the median nerve - one of the major nerves in the hand - becomes compressed in the carpal tunnel (a narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist.)

There are a number of factors that may play a role in the development of CTS. The anatomy of the individual's wrist, sex (CTS is more common in women), obesity, other nerve or inflammatory conditions, injuries, and, of course, workplace factors.

If you or someone you know suffers from CTS, give us a call to schedule an appointment today!

April: National Stress Awareness Month

Fast Facts about Stress

Stress on our bodies can be categorized into three main areas: physical, chemical, and emotional stress.

  • Physical stress comes from the postures and positions you maintain throughout the day; it results from your actions and activity, or lack thereof. Physical stress is relatively easy to detect and can be corrected with adequate rest, exercise, massage therapy and chiropractic care.

  • Chemicals, both man-made and natural can be a stress on your body. It occurs if you have poor nutrition or if you smoke, use alcohol or drugs. Toxic chemicals in our food, water, air, personal care and cleaning products accumulate in our bodies and add more stress. Avoiding bad habits, maintaining a healthy diet, and having a cleaner lifestyle will help reduce the chemical stress on your body.

  • Emotional stress is a little more self-explanatory and unfortunately considered by many as a normal state of being. Work, family, relationships and city life can all be significant sources of stress which in turn can have an enormous effect on our body’s ability to function well. The hormone cortisol, known as “the stress hormone” is circulated throughout the body with wide ranging effects including poor sleep, weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and general anxiety.

Chiropractic care helps manage stress by bringing balance back to the body. Treatments help by improving the nervous system, relaxing tense muscles, and lowering blood pressure.

Proper spinal alignment is the first step for reducing stress. When the spine is misaligned, the nervous system is unable to properly send messages through the body. Better spinal alignment means better communication and increased system efficiency.

Make chiropractic care a part of your health plan! Give us a call; we will put together specific treatment plans to correct your underlying spinal conditions, allowing you to express life and health to the max.

Whiplash Fast Facts

Whiplash Fast Facts

Did you know…

  • There are many ways, besides car accidents to get whiplash? Car accidents are the most common cause of whiplash, but they can also occur due to a slip and fall or playing a high impact sport like football.
  • It doesn’t take much force for whiplash to occur? Whiplash injuries can occur at speeds as low as 5-10 mph. While cars may be built to sustain the force of another vehicle, our bodies are not. The severity of the injury depends on if you were properly restrained, so be sure to always wear your seatbelt!
  • Symptoms are not always immediate & go beyond just neck pain? Although you may feel fine after an accident, it may actually take hours, days, or even weeks for symptoms to develop. Neck and shoulder pain are the most common symptoms related to whiplash injuries, however, other symptoms may include:
        • Headache
        • Dizziness
        • Fatigue
        • Difficulty swallowing, concentrating, or sleeping
        • Blurred vision
        • Nausea
  • The risk of whiplash injuries increases with age? As we get older, our movement becomes more limited, our muscles lose flexibility and strength, and our ligaments aren’t as stretchy. So when our neck whips back and forth during an accident, there’s more potential for damage. Additionally, the elderly and people who already have neck problems (such as arthritis) may experience more serious whiplash injuries.
  • Chiropractic care can help? We manage whiplash injuries with careful and precise neck adjustments. Sometimes, ice and rehabilitative exercises are used to address the injured neck, shoulder muscles, and joints. The goal of chiropractic care is to restore spinal movement; improving function while decreasing pain and inflammation.

We always recommend that you come into the office immediately for an examination if you have been involved in an accident. Even a minor fender bender can produce injuries. The earlier you are treated, the better your chances for a fully recovery!

If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, give us a call and get on our schedule!

Back to School: Backpack Safety

BACKPACK SAFETY

Doing some last minute, back-to-school shopping? Here is what you should be looking for to help select the best possible backpack for your child:

Is the backpack the correct size for your child? The backpack should never be wider or longer than your child’s torso, and the pack should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking.

Does the backpack have two wide, padded shoulder straps? Non-padded straps are not only uncomfortable, but also they can place unnecessary pressure on the neck and shoulder muscles.

Does your child use both straps? Lugging a heavy backpack by one strap can cause a disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, low-back pain, and poor posture.

Are the shoulder straps adjustable? The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body. The backpack should be evenly centered in the middle of your child’s back.

Does the backpack have a padded back? A padded back not only provides increased comfort, but also protects your child from being poked by sharp edges on school supplies (pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc.) inside the pack.

Does the pack have several compartments? A backpack with individualized compartments helps position the contents most effectively. Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child’s back, and try to place the heaviest items closet to the body.

Parents or guardians should help children pack their backpacks properly, and they should make sure children never carry more than 10 percent of their body weight. For example, a child who weighs 100 pounds shouldn’t carry a backpack heavier than 10 pounds, and a 50-pound child shouldn’t carry more than 5 pounds.

In addition, parents should ask their children to report any pain or other problems resulting from carrying a backpack. If the pain is severe or persistent, give our office a call as soon as possible! Both of our doctors have years of experience helping and treating adolescent back pain. 605-332-9235

Auto Accidents: Medical Coverage

Motor Vehicle Accidents
How Insurance Works
How insurance works in personal injury cases and what you can expect for coverage.

Primary Insurance: Your Auto Insurance
A majority of auto insurance policies include Medical Payment (Med Pay) coverage. Med Pay pays medical expenses for you and any passengers in your vehicle who are injured during the accident. There is a maximum amount your insurance company will pay for each person involved in the accident.
*Note: Med Pay will pay for your medical bills up-front at 100% until your limit is reached. Your insurance company will then be reimbursed by the liability insurance.

Secondary Insurance: Your Health Insurance
If you have maxed out your auto insurance Med Pay, your bills will be submitted to your health insurance. Unlike with Med Pay, you will be subject to any co-pays, deductibles, and other costs associated with your coverage. You can include these out of pocket costs into your settlement demands from the liability insurance.  Payments made by your health insurance will be reimbursed by the liability insurance.
Tertiary Insurance: Liability Insurance
This is the auto insurance of the at-fault party in the accident. While the liability insurance is responsible for your auto and injury bills related to the accident, it will not pay any claims until a settlement is reached. If you do not open a medical claim with your auto insurance and/or do no have health insurance, you will be responsible for the cost of your care until the settlement is reached. Due to this, we strongly encourage contacting your auto insurance and opening a medical claim.
*Note: A settlement may not cover all your bills & out of pocket costs, especially if you didn’t open a Med Pay claim or use your health insurance. For major accidents, you may even need to hire an attorney to ensure you are properly reimbursed.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Hey everyone, Kelcey here again! Back with my next blog regarding basic insurance information that may be helpful to know! Today, I wanted to discuss the difference between an In-Network Provider and an Out-of-Network Provider and how it affects you as the member. Additionally, I will touching on recent change of Measure 17, which removed restrictions of insurance companies on the providers.

** Please Note: I am not an insurance expert. All terms and actions are explained to the best of my abilities and in accordance to Excel Chiropractic’s policies and procedures (aka: very by the book, we love to follow the rules here!)
***Also Note: These are basic terms and explanations. I will explain what occurs with the MOST COMMON insurance plans. There are outliers that exist to throw everyone for a loop. Ultimately, there is no guarantee of benefits and they will be full determined when the claim is processed (aka: we will abide to the benefits presented to us when we receive the claim back from the insurance company. This means your benefits may be different from what we were originally told.)

·         In-Network Provider: Refers to providers or health care facilities that have negotiated a contract with an insurance company.
o    These providers have submitted an application into the insurance company to become a part of the network.
o   Once accepted into the network, the provider agrees to accept your plan’s contracted rate as payment in full for services
o   That contracted rate includes both your insurer’s share of the cost, and your share. Your share may be in the form of a co-payment, deductible, or co-insurance.
§  Insured individuals pay less when using an in-network provider because those networks provide services at lower cost to the insurance companies with which they have contracts.
·         Out-out-Network Provider: Providers who have not agreed to any set rate with your insurer, and may charge more.
o   Your plan may require higher co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance for out-of-network care than for in-network providers.
o   Your plan may not cover out-of-network care at all, leaving you responsible for the bill in full.
·         Measure 17: A measure passed in 2014 that requires all health insurers to include all willing and qualified health care providers on their provider lists
o   There is an important key phrase to remember here: The provider must be willing to be a part of that network. This means that the provider must submit an application, go through the insurer’s credentialing process, and agree to the contracted rates before they can be considered an in-network provider. If they chose not to do this, they will remain out-of-network, even if you chose to see them.
§  An insurance company cannot be forced to include a provider who has not gone through their credentialing process.
§  Additionally, there may be certain conditions that the provider does not meet, and thus cannot be a part of that network.
·         For example: Some Blue Cross and Blue Shield of MN plans only include providers in the state of Minnesota.

The easiest way to find out if your chosen provider is considered in-network with your insurance company is to call the Member Services phone number which is located on the back of your insurance card. Give the representative the doctor’s name and practicing location and they should be able to tell you whether or not he or she is in-network.

Also, it never hurts to ask the provider directly if he or she would be willing to join your health insurance network. They may have their reasons for staying out of that particular network or they may not even know that they’re weren’t in-network to begin with!

If you have and questions or concerns regarding these terms or any insurance information, please do not hesitate to give me call. I will do the best I can to help!
